Amiri Geuka Farris Wins North Charleston Arts Festival Design Competition

The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department announced Bluffton, SC, artist Amiri Geuka Farris, as the winner of the 2014 North Charleston Arts Festival Design Competition. As the winner of the statewide contest, Farris’ mixed media piece, titled “Gullah Islander Toss,” will be used to promote the 2014 North Charleston Arts Festival, taking place May 2-10. In addition, the piece will become part of the City’s Public Art Collection.

Amiri Farris Gullah Islander TossFarris’ design was selected from 53 entries by artists from across the state. The selection was made by a review panel appointed by the Cultural Arts Department who judged the entries based on quality, originality, appeal to festival patrons from a broad range of backgrounds, and ability to convey the spirit of the festival as a public celebration of arts and culture.

“Gullah Islander Toss” honors the traditions of the Gullah-Geechee culture and is also an attempt to draw a greater focus to “a celebration of history,” Farris said.

“You will see elements like dance and rejoicing with references to important cultural elements like the land, cast net making, throwing and artistic traditions,” he explained. The piece is composed of a number of layers that involve design elements such as Adinkra symbols, paint drips, and paint embellishments. The dynamism of these elements represents the passing of time and movement into the future. As with many of Farris’ other works, the piece refers to specific Gullah traditions and historic elements while blurring the boundaries between traditional and contemporary modes of representation.

An exhibition of his work, including the winning piece, “Gullah Islander Toss,” will be on display at the North Charleston City Gallery throughout the month of May 2014. The gallery is located within the Charleston Area Convention Center at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston, SC. Gallery hours are 9:00 am-5:00 pm daily, and admission and parking are free. The public is invited to meet the artist at the gallery on May 3 and 4 during the Main Event of the North Charleston Arts Festival. T-shirts and posters featuring the winning design will be available for sale.

Creating a Gypsy Cultural Center in the Ile-De-France, France

Shakespeare has written : It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness !

TERNE ROMA’s performances, the professional association created in 2007 by Miroslav GULYAS, dancer, actor, couturier, and his wife Marcela, dancer, singer and actress, express all the richness, the beauty and the generosity of their ancestral Gypsy culture. Its roots stem from ancient India, but it carries the memory of the many people and countries encountered during the course of centuries, wandering from East to West. The strength and seduction of this culture lie in its reconciliation of opposites, its openness to the world and others, its willingness to assimilate in an original synthesis various customs and traditions, all rooted in the pantheistic belief of a universal feminine power, a creative energy which is the source of all love, the Indian Shakti personified by Kali.

TERNE ROMA’s dancers, in their sumptuous costumes designed by Miroslav, look like exotic colourful flowers, butterflies with shimmering wings, brilliantly shining birds of paradise.Through their ethereal forms and gracious movements they convey all the passion and sensuality of the Orient, which vibrate in the spellbinding rhythm of the music, in the moving voice and songs of Marcela. Miroslav speaks in a lovely way of the Gypsy women’s innocence ( pudicité !),beautiful, seductive and sensual, without any sexual connotations. In a materialistic age, permissive of the body but puritanical of the heart and of the spirit, they stand for timeless and exalted femininity. Their beauty and poetry speak directly to the soul and touch the heart, more potent and more eloquent than words or vociferous claims.

TERNE ROMA is above all a family story, not only because of Rébecca and Jean-Sébastien,Miroslav and Marcela’s children, but because it gathers in the company all the various aspects of the Gypsy culture : Manouche, Gitan, Sinti, Yenish, Kalderash. It is the aim of LA MAISON DELA CULTURE TSIGANE ET GENS DU VOYAGE DE FRANCE to promote the richness of the Gypsy culture as a whole in welcoming all its diversity, and to act as a link between all the various ethnic communities in France at the regional, national and international level.

MONIQUE RICCARDI-CUBITT, art historian and journalist, author, poet and lecturer, is the project’s coordinator. It sums up all her action in favour of the Gypsy culture since 2010.Stéphane Hessel described her as such : Moving poetess and precious defenderess of all essentialcauses.

A fund-raising campaign for the creation of the cultural centre is on line on the crowdfunding site ULULE :http://fr.ulule.com/maison-romacultura/

“Becoming Harriet Tubman”

“Becoming Harriet Tubman” written by and starring Natalie Daise

September 6, 7, & 8, 2013 @ ARTworks in Beaufort
Part of the Beaufort County Public Library’s ‘One County Reads the Civil War’ program, “Becoming Harriet Tubman” is a one-woman show that tells how one little girl became an historical icon. Through narrative, music, and five characters based on real people, this 60-minute play compellingly portrays the legend of the former slave-turned abolitionist Harriet Tubman. She was a Union spy, and conductor of the Underground Railroad, and fought in the Lowcountry during the Civil War. This play provides insight, entertainment and education for audiences of all ages, produced by Natalie Daise Productions.
Natalie Daise Becoming Harriet Tubman 2013
The Charleston City Paper reviewed the show in 2012: “Natalie Daise is a masterful storyteller in the old Southern tradition of oral history. In her one-woman show, Becoming Harriet Tubman, which she wrote and performs, Daise tells the story of how a slave girl named Araminta Ross became the historical figure known as the “Moses” or “Conductor” of the Underground Railroad. For an hour, the audience at the nearly sold-out Threshold Repertory Theatre sat fixated on the lone Daise as she smoothly alternated between narrator and the multiple characters in Tubman’s life.”
Natalie Daise is an actor, singer, storyteller, and visual artist. She is well known for modeling effective and joyful parenting, and for bringing Gullah culture to national and international television audiences through Nick Jr’s “Gullah Gullah Island.” Her handicrafts have been featured on HGTV’s “Country Style” and in the magazine Coastal Living, and her performances with husband Ron have validated and celebrated the Gullah people for a decade. Together they have been awarded South Carolina’s prestigious Palmetto and Folk Heritage Awards. http://gullahmama.com
