Daughter of Holocaust and Atomic Bomb Survivors Speaking throughout Florida

Meant to beRoslyn Franken, inspirational speaker and author of Meant to Be: A True Story of Might, Miracles and Triumph of the Human Spirit, delivers her multi-media program with the powerful true story of her Jewish parents surviving and finding love against all odds. She is now touring Florida and scheduling throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Upcoming events are

  • April 20 at 7:30 pm at the University of Tampa Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values, 601 Frederic H. Spaulding Dr., Tampa, FL

All events are free and open to the public to attend. Book signings will follow each  presentation. Her books are available on Amazon, and a limited number of autographed books are available at the Florida Holocaust Museum gift shop in St. Petersburg, FL.

Personal testimonies from Holocaust and other World War II survivors help to ensure this turning point in human history is not forgotten. By listening to survivors tell their stories, the audience can relate the real-life experiences of these individuals to the history.

The problem is that there are fewer and fewer survivors left to give their testimonies. Also, those still alive often do not want to talk about their past, and others are sometimes unable to tell their story due to physical and/or other health limitations.

Roslyn Franken is carrying the torch for future generations by sharing her parents’ inspiring story of survival, love and triumph through her important work as a professional speaker and author of Meant to Be. Check for her book in libraries and in holocaust museums.

joelYou’ve heard about the tiny house movement. Maybe you’ve seen TV shows like Tiny House Nation or Tiny House Hunters. You’re no doubt aware that the traditional American dream of a roomy, multi-bedroom home is not as attractive (or affordable) to Millennials as it was to previous generations. But you probably haven’t heard how local and state governments around the country are (belatedly) responding to the revolution in downsized living by altering zoning laws and building codes. Or how aging Baby Boomers are waking up to the advantages of tiny house living in retirement. Or how some activists see the smaller house trend as a potential solution to homelessness.

I’m Joel Allen, a seasoned broadcast journalist who’s done more than just research and report on the tiny house movement. I’m living it. My wife and I made the transition from 2,000 square feet, three bedrooms and a two-car garage to less than 400 square feet, one miniature bedroom and no garage. And we love it.

We’ve learned a few things about the pros and cons of tiny house living and we’re not saying it’s entirely easy. But I’d be happy to share with your group or company some of what we now know about the ins and outs of a downsized life and maybe I can help open your eyes to the huge benefits of a tiny house.

Brookgreen Gardens Hosts Gullah Celebrity Chef

On Saturday, February 28, at 2 p.m. Sallie Ann Robinson, author and Gullah celebrity chef, will present “Cooking and Living the Daufuskie Gullah Way” a cooking demonstration of crab rice and pecan crunch cookies. Part of “The Reign of Rice Lecture Series” about the Spirituality of Rice Heritage, this winter program will be in the Lowcountry Center Auditorium and is free with garden admission. Reservations are required by calling 235-6016. Robinson will be available for book signings after the program.unnamed

Born on Daufuskie Island, off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina, Sallie Ann Robinson was among the students taught by Pat Conroy when the famous author was a teacher. Robinson has grown in her own right into the author of two celebrated cookbooks and an accomplished chef. Her culinary expertise has helped to preserve the food dishes for which her native island is famous and her work as a speaker nationwide, and as a tour guide on boat trips out of Savannah, Georgia, going to Daufuskie, have made her an authentic and much sought-after representative of Gullah culture.

Brookgreen Gardens is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve and display American sculpture and regional plants, animals, and history. It is located on U.S. 17 between Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
